In April 2009 the law was changed to add cancer to the list of conditions that give exemption from prescription charges. There are still people who are not claiming this exemption.
Patients undergoing treatment for cancer, including the effects of cancer or the effects of current or previous cancer treatment, are able to apply for a certificate that will give them exemption. They should ask their doctor for an application form which will need to be countersigned by their GP, hospital or service doctor (or, at their GP's discretion, a member of the practice who can access their medical records).
