This postgraduate qualification is designed to address development needs and challenges facing leaders in palliative and end-of-life care both now and in the future.

A pilot programme has been developed to include chief executives, senior managers and suitably qualified people who aspire to lead hospices both in the UK and overseas. It is envisaged that the collective learning experienced by a pilot cohort of 18 participants will become a laboratory for developing strategies, conducting research and informing the development and succession of leaders in the hospice movement.

NEW Mandatory McKinley Syringe Driver Training

Date:   17th March 2010 (1pm to 2:30pm)

Venue:  Yeadon Health Centre

Target Audience:  All registered community nurses within NHS Leeds Community Healthcare will have to attend this training before April 2010.

From April 2010 NHS Leeds Community Healthcare are moving to a new syringe driver, the McKinley T34.  All staff need to sign up for training in preparation for the transition to the new pump.

Teams should ensure all staff are booked on a session.

These sessions are limited to 15 people maximum.  If this course is full please select another date.

for Hospital Based Nurses and Allied Health Professionals

(Band 5 and Band 6)

Aim: To increase confidence and competence in communicating with palliative care patients and their relatives. This opportunity is aimed at Band 5 and Band 6 nurses and AHP’s.

Method: Participants will receive a workbook that will require completion prior to attendance at a study day. The study day will provide an opportunity to consolidate learning and practice skills using facilitated role play. Topics will include anger, collusion, denial and “difficult” conversations.

Venue: Cookridge Conference Centre, Level 7, Bexley Wing, 9-4pm.

This two hour session introduces community nurses to some of the basic theories about the grieving process and allows you to explore these ideas and develop your skills and awareness in a small group.

At the end of the session you should: 

• have a greater awareness and understanding of the grieving process
• feel more confident in addressing bereavement issues with the people you work with 
• feel more confident in recognising what is part of the ‘normal’ grieving process and recognising when people need more specialised support

The training includes:

• Introduction
• Brief look at theory
• Short loss exercise with follow up discussion
• Small group exercise using a case history
• Whole group feedback with questions and answer evaluation
