The Liverpool Care Pathway (LCP) has been developed to transfer the hospice model of care for dying patients into the acute hospital setting, and has been used across LTHT for five years. Around 40% of patients who die in Leeds Hospitals are now cared for using the LCP as a template of best practice.

An e-learning package has been devised for all staff within the Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust. We recommend that all staff working within areas using the LCP complete this short E learning package - it can be used as an introduction to using the LCP and as a  refresher for staff who are familiar with it and have attended face to face training.

McKinley Syringe Driver Training

Registered Community Nursing Staff Only

Date:   28th September 2010 (1:30pm to 4:30pm)

Venue:  Wetherby Health Centre

Target Audience:  All registered community nurses within NHS Leeds Community Healthcare.

NHS Leeds Community Healthcare have now moved to a new syringe driver, the McKinley T34.

The initial changeover training has now been completed.  All new sessions will cover training on all aspects of the syringe driver including guidance on medications.

Teams should ensure that any registered nurses who have not had syringe driver training are booked on this session. Priority will be given in the first instance to those staff who could not attend session delivered by McKinley trainers earlier in the year.

These sessions are limited to 15 people maximum.

Syringe Driver Event Flyer

This new part-time Masters in Hospice Leadership is designed to address the development needs and challenges facing leaders in palliative and end-of-life care, both now and in the future. Developed in partnership with the International Observatory on End of Life Care and Help the Hospices, the programme is designed for chief executives, senior managers and suitably qualified people who aspire to lead hospices both in the UK and overseas.

A central aim of the programme is to develop professionals capable of integrating their leadership practice in the context of modern hospice care, and to create a network of people engaged in learning about leadership who can share good practice across participating organisations and services.

Following to the success of our other training events (communication skills and complementary therapies), Health Care Assistants working in the community are invited to attend a study day about palliative care.

Aims and objectives:

• Explore the principles and strategies of effective communication within the healthcare setting, with particular emphasis on palliative care.
• Discuss key communication skills.
• Be aware of barriers to effective communication.
• Consider specific communication issues that may arise in palliative care.

Also covered at the event:

• An introduction to the issues involved in pre-bereavement and bereavement support in relation to your role.  This will include practical workshops.

This session is limited to 20 people maximum.  Please note lunch will not be provided.

Target audience:  This event is an all day meeting for Trainees and Consultants in Pain and Palliative Medicine in the Yorkshire and Region

• opportunity to see equipment and software
• clinical question and answer session
• competencies in ITDD as defined within curricula of Royal Colleges
